If you’ve ever wondered whether Faber‑Castell Polychromos or Caran d’Ache Luminance pencils are better, the truth is… they’re both amazing, just in different ways.

Polychromos are oil‑based and have a harder core, which makes them perfect for super fine details, sharp points, and lots of layering without that annoying waxy bloom. They’re great when you want crisp lines and realistic textures.

Luminance, on the other hand, are the soft, creamy dream pencils. They blend like butter, give you rich, vibrant color, and cover big areas beautifully. Because they’re more opaque, they’re fantastic for bold, painterly effects and smooth gradients.

Here’s the quick breakdown:
Hardness: Polychromos = harder; Luminance = softer.
Blending: Luminance wins for smooth blending; Polychromos shine in layering.
Style: Polychromos for detail lovers; Luminance for bold, blended looks.
Opacity: Polychromos are more transparent; Luminance are more opaque.
Waxy Bloom: Polychromos don’t get it; Luminance can get a little, but much less than softer brands like Prismacolor.

Most artists actually use both together — Polychromos for the fine details and Luminance for blending, coverage, and those intense highlights. They complement each other beautifully.
